Secret’s and Surprises

“’Flirting is mandatory’? Pansy, have you been put under Imperius by a Hufflepuff?” Draco asked incredulously.

“Honestly, Draco, don’t be ridiculous. No Hufflepuff is discreet enough to get away with Unforgivables without help.”

“You expect me to believe that my best friend would put such a ridiculous directive in her party invitations otherwise?” Draco wondered.

“I was desperate, all right? I’m sick and tired of your rows with Potter. There is so much repressed sexual tension between the two of you, the rest of us are lucky you haven’t set the Potions lab ablaze. Yet,” Pansy huffed.

“Sexual tension? Between me and Potter? Don’t be daft, Pans. Potter barely notices I exist,” Draco claimed emphatically.

Pansy gave an inelegant snort of disbelief at that.

“Draco Malfoy, you are so completely oblivious it’s sickening. Potter hardly ever takes his eyes off you. And I know you watch him as well.”

“Of course we watch each other. ‘Know thy enemy’ and all that, right?” Draco retorted.

“That doesn’t explain why Potter was drooling over you at breakfast like you were some kind of treacle tart. He had a look in his eyes like he wanted to devour you,” Pansy claimed.

“Nonsense, Pansy. Things between Potter and I are the same as they’ve always been. He hates me, and I can’t stand him. His hair always looks like he’s just been shagged, and his eyes remind me of the killing curse,” Draco stated, blushing scarlet.

“Aww, wittle Dwakie has a crushy-poo on wittle Potty,” Pansy teased.

“I do not, you cow. Will you cease that infantile tone this instant? It rather reminds me of Auntie Bella, and I’d rather not lose my lunch,” Draco bristled.

“I apologise for that, Draco,” Pansy stated, looking slightly contrite, “But I still say you and Potter like each other. All this fighting is the equivalent of pulling pigtails, if you ask me.”

“Luckily for me, no one asked you,” Draco sneered

“Temper, temper, Mr. Malfoy. Well, I’m off to deliver the rest of these invitations. See to it that you don’t cause any trouble with Potter tonight, please? I’d really like this party to be fun. We all need that. The Dark Lord is gone, and I say that deserves a celebration, don’t you think so?”

“I’ll behave, Pansy,” Draco promised.

“I don’t expect you to be perfect, Draco. After all, you aren’t Potter. Just steer clear of him if you sense a fight on the horizon, okay? I trust you to do that much.”

“On my honour as a Slytherin, Pans,” Draco reiterated.

Pansy eyed Draco solemnly for an instant before making her determined way over to the Gryffindor table. She failed to see the devious grin that flitted across his face. Fighting wasn’t all he did with Potter, and it was past time for their friends to know that.

Draco waited until Pansy was headed in the direction of the Ravenclaw table before sending a wink in Potter’s direction and was gratified to see his lips turn up in a small grin. Merlin, but Potter was gorgeous. He didn’t need the luxury of designer clothing, perfect hair, or magically enhanced cologne. He was perfect, just as Pansy had said.

Pansy would be unbearable when she was proved right at her party this evening.

Should he continue to mock-fight with Potter just to shut Pansy up?

In the end, he decided the sight of them kissing would do just as well.

He hoped the Hufflepuffs would bring smelling salts.

Everyone would know by the end of the party that Potter was his.
