Garden-Made Bargain
Hugo Weasley looked in wonder at the small garden behind his parents’ house, giving an appreciative whistle. He grinned widely as his friend Scorpius nearly jumped out of his skin.
“Mum’s gonna go mental when she sees this, Scor. You must’ve worked some sort of miracle out here. I didn’t invite you to visit just so you could help me in the garden, y’know?”
“I didn’t hear you protesting too loudly when I offered to help. In any case, I like Herbology. It was really no bother. Just so long as I don’t have to de-gnome. They always bite me.”
“They must enjoy the unique sweetness of your pure-blood flesh.”
“That’s disgusting, Hugo!”
“How did you do all this? We aren’t allowed to use magic outside of school.”
“Art must take reality by surprise.”
“So…you aren’t going to tell me?” Hugo guessed.
“Got it in one. Besides, it’s meant to be a thank you for having me over. It would spoil the intent if I told you how I did it.”
“You are so bloody frustrating sometimes, Scorpius. I don’t know why I keep you around.”
“Because you love me, and because I never let slip to your father that it was you who turned Stan Shunpike’s hair green when we rode the Knight Bus that time. Remember?”
“That was an accident. I was nervous about possibly ending up in Slytherin.”
“It wasn’t so bad was it?” Scorpius wondered.
“Not in the end, no, but you were a right git at first.”
“I was homesick, and I felt under pressure. Forgive me if I wasn’t all sunshine and roses. It was a long time ago. I’m a different person now.”
“Yes, you are. I—Scorpius, can I ask you something?”
“What?” Scorpius asked, bending to tend to more flowers.
“Would you, maybe…consider…going out with me?”
“Of course. Did you want to go to Honeydukes?”
“I—yes, I mean—no, not as mates, yeah? Like…on a date, maybe?”
“I will go out with you, Hugo. On one condition.”
“What?” Hugo asked eagerly.
“That you get rid of the gnome eyeing me like a filet mignon. The only mouth I want anywhere near me is yours.”
“Gladly.”
