Summary: Harry has a mission, and Draco is afraid.
“Get your arse back in bed right now, Potter! It’s far too early for anything that isn’t nocturnal.”
“I’m sorry, love, but I’ve got to go. One of the high-security prisoners has escaped.”
“Harry, you’re the head of the Auror department! I’m certain that somewhere in your education, they taught you how to delegate responsibility. Let one of the subordinates handle this, please?”
“Draco, I can’t. They need me there to coordinate the teams for the search.”
“Fine, then! Let them work you into St. Mungo’s! See if I care.”
“I’ll be fine, Draco. I promise.”
“You can’t keep that promise. Some of those rogue Death Eaters are ruthless. They’ll kill you if they get a chance.”
“What do you want me to do, Draco? I can’t quit being an Auror.”
“Just don’t go playing hero and get yourself hexed. I don’t see why you even need to work. We have all the money we need. Wouldn’t you love to have an easier life?”
“Life isn’t meant to be easy. Life is meant to make you a stronger person.”
“And what good does all that noble sentiment do if you’re dead? All it does is leave me with empty arms and a broken heart. Call me a selfish bastard, but I’d rather have you here with me. I suppose I never quite learnt how to be a stronger person after all.”
“Of course you did. You refused to identify me in the manor. That proved to me there was more to you than the spoilt prat I’d known in school. You are a stronger person. I’m the selfish one.”
“Harry Potter, selfish? That’s a stretch, even for you.”
“I am. All through school, I wanted nothing more than to be an Auror. I stopped at nothing until I got what I wanted, and I have no intention of quitting now, even though I know it scares you out of your wits every time I go on a mission. That seems selfish to me, but I can’t change who I am any more than you can.”
“I suppose we should both pray to be better people.”
“I dunno. I quite like you the way you are.”
