Intervention

“It’s cold out today. Some days, I start to wonder if it will ever be warm again.”

“What did I always say, Georgie? No winter lasts forever.”

“Certainly feels like it will sometimes, though. Especially since you left.”

“Some sacrifices are necessary, George. We knew what we were getting into.”

“I know, but that doesn’t make being separated any easier. Why did you have to leave?”

“I don’t know why any more than you do, but it's time for me to go. You still have a life here and people who need you.”

“Like who?”

“Lee Jordan, for one. I’ve seen the way he looks at you when you two are working in the shop. Even caught him checking out your arse once. “

“Why should I take anything you say seriously? You always did love a good prank.”

“Still do. But I’m not lying about that. Lee really was checking you out. His tongue was nearly on the floor.”

“Lee’s just a friend. I—couldn’t think of him that way.”

“Only because you won’t let yourself, you ninny.”

“Stop it, it’s my life, and I’ll live it the way I want to.”

“Oh, I’m sorry. You enjoy living like an old, sad git?”

“I’m not a git!”

“You aren’t even living! You’re just surviving.”

“I’m doing the best I know how, all right? Back off.”

“You deserve better than just to survive, George. You deserve to be happy.”

“How can I?! Tell me that!”

“I suggest getting your head out of your arse.”

“Why are you so fixated on my arse? It’s just creepy.”

“Excuse me, I am not the one fixated on your backside. You really should give Lee a chance, yeah? He’s hopelessly in love with you.”

“I just can’t.”

“George. For me? You’re bringing down my party with all your moping. Here comes Mr. Lovestruck now.”

“Fred! You did this, didn’t you?!”

“Hello. I thought you might be here. Could I walk you back to the shop, maybe?”

“Of course, Lee. Would you like to stop for a coffee? It’s cold out.”

“Coffee sounds nice, thanks.”

The two walked from the cemetery hand in hand.

Fred was smiling as he disappeared.
