Notes: I have no idea where this came from. I’ve never had kids and have no particular desire to do so at present, but I saw the prompts for this month, and here we are. My apologies if it seems too sappy/sweet/ fluffy or out of character for Dudley, but I believe having a magical child would really make him re-evaluate past behaviours.
Written for: prompt #40 at dove_drabbles- “Get out there and make your dreams happen.”; JMDC Prompt # 119-‘Do you believe in magic?”
Summary: Dudley has a dilemma and comes to Harry and Draco for advice.
Dudley’s Dilemma
“Harry, I can’t believe my son is a wizard! How? Why?”
“Do you believe in magic or not, Dudley?”
“It’s not really a matter of believing, now is it? I know there is such as magic. You saved me from the…whatever those horrible things were called. I can’t hate magic anymore, but Dad’s words are still in my head. Daniel is just a baby. I want to be a good dad, Harry, but I don’t know what to do for him.”
“Dursley, it’s really not so difficult. What a child needs most is love. And a healthy dose of discipline and boundaries.”
“Draco has a point, Dudley. Children don’t come with a rule book. All you can do is just do the best you can, teach them, and love them. You’re already doing a better job at that than Uncle Vernon ever did, just by being here. You changed after that dementor attack.”
“Yes, well, reliving your worst memories can be hell when you’re a spoilt bully the way I was. I never want to be that way again. I love Daniel, whether he has magic or not. All I ever wanted was to be a good father. I have a lot to make up for.”
“You are a good father. And you can always come to us. Scorpius is starting at nursery soon. Daniel doesn’t need to be lonely.”
“Thank you, Harry. And Draco as well. I’ll keep that in mind.”
“You’ve already done a good job of making your dreams happen, Dursley. Just keep getting out there with him and making sure that you’re the best dad you can be.”
“I will, I promise. But before I go, could one of you set my hair to rights? He’s somehow turned it blue.”
“Daniel clearly takes after his Uncle Harry. Didn’t you do that before you came to Hogwarts, love?”
“Apparently some things do run in the family.”
