Breaking the News

“Ronald Bilius Weasley, what is this?”

“It’s a Secrecy Sensor, Harry. You know what they look like. Mad-Eye moody had loads, remember? And please don’t use my full name, all right? You sound like my mum when she’s telling me off.”

“Why in the name of Merlin did you buy me a Secrecy Sensor for a birthday present? I’d have been much happier with a new Snitch, or something less…suspicious.”

“Does that mean you don’t like your gift, mate?”

“Don’t play innocent with me, Ron. I know why you bought me this.”

“What are you on about, Harry? I thought you’d need it for work. Being an Auror, you have to deal with all sorts you can’t trust. I just wanted you to have some protection, yeah?”

“You bought me this because you don’t trust Draco to watch my back when we’re on missions, didn’t you?”

“I don’t trust the ferret, Harry. He’d abandon you just to save his own skin.”

“He would not. He knows how important it is for partners to work together. Not only that, but he is a genuinely good person now. Why can’t you believe me?”

“Because sometimes people who seem good end up being not as good as you might have hoped. He was a git to us in Hogwarts, and he might still be one. I say a leopard doesn’t change his spots so easily as all that. Just promise me you’ll be careful around the prat?”

“He isn’t a prat, Ron. He is good. Even if you don’t trust Draco Malfoy, could you at least have enough faith in me to trust my judgement on this?”

“I’ll try, mate, but don’t say I didn’t warn you if he uses you as a human shield when the pair of you are apprehending a suspect.”

“I would never do that, Weasley. I wouldn’t sacrifice Harry to save my life, and he knows that,” Malfoy’s voice said.

“Gods! What are you doing here?”

“I asked him to be here. I have something to tell you.”

“Harry, please don’t tell me that you’re in love with that—with him.”

“So you want me to lie.”

“Where’s Lockheart when you need him?”
