Some things that irritate me to death...
Dec. 6th, 2012 07:13 amNow, ordinarily I try not to be a snob when it comes to languages. I'm definitely not perfect in my usages alll of the time, particularly when it comes to words that are foreign to me. I get things wrong fairly often at times. But, when my aunt called Les Miserables "Less Miserables" with a completely English pronunciation, I very much wanted to cringe. I've never been fortunate enough to see it performed, but I was under the impression that most people have at least a passing familiarity with the play, if not the original novel. I would really like to go and see the film version when it comes out.
I realize that the irritation is likely the result of the fact that I majored in English, but hearing that was the first time in a very long while something has truly bothered me. I ought not be so bothered, but I really hate to hear the names of well-known works be so butchered. I think it was her putting the "s" into the Les that really bothered me.
Oh, well. It's a minor thing, and there are worse problems in the world.
Even though it did make that scholarly section of my brain wince.
I don't mean to irritate, poke fun or belitttle anyone.
I probably sound like a pretentious child, but it did bug me.
