hogwarts365 Prompt 235- “We read to know we're not alone.” ― William Nicholson, Shadowlands, Discredit, Reverence
Disclaimer: This is a work of fiction created for fun and no profit has been made.
Notes: Apologies for the fact that this is a very late post, but please do read and enjoy it. I wanted to play with this pairing. Feedback is welcome.
Summary: Hermione and Luna discover a mutual fondness for many things.
Hermione closed her book and looked up, sighing in discontent at the jarring sensation of coming back to reality too soon.
“Hermione? I thought I might find you here,” Luna whispered, voice sounding somehow loud in the silence that pervaded the library.
“Oh! Luna, you startled me!”
“I can see that. I apologise. I was just rather lonely, you see, and you have an interesting mind. I thought perhaps we might talk. What book were you reading?”
“Oh, I was just re-reading Hogwarts: A History. The relationships between the founders were quite interesting.”
“I agree. Especially between Slytherin and Gryffindor. They were fascinating, weren’t they?”
“You’ve read it? I thought I was the only one.”
“I read quite often. It helps me to know I’m not alone.”
“I feel the same way. Ron and Harry tell me I treat books like sacred objects.”
“Books are sacred objects that should be treated with reverence. If a person thinks otherwise, that’s to their discredit.”
“Very well said, Luna. I wish more people felt that way about books.”
“So do I. The world would be a much better place.”
“True. Not to mention, far less noisy.”
“There is something so peaceful about libraries isn’t there?”
“Almost like churches, but without religious overtones. I feel at home here in a way that I don’t in other places.”
“Did I disturb you? I suppose I should leave you in peace.”
“No, no. You’re perfectly welcome to stay. This has been…rather nice. You surprised me, Luna.”
“People often say that about me once they get to know me. I know everyone calls me Loony, but I’m not. Not really. My mind just works differently. Most people don’t understand me at first.”
Hermione felt her cheeks heat with shame, realising that she’d been guilty of judging the other girl just as harshly as others.
“I’m sorry, Luna. That’s unfair to you.”
“You’ve nothing to apologise for. Part of my purpose in life is to help the world to be more open-minded.”
“You are one of the most interesting girls I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting, Luna.”
“Thank you. I’ve enjoyed talking to you.”
“Likewise. Would you like to get a coffee?”
