dove_drabbles prompt 147-Every challenge is just a new change.
Notes: Inspired by prompts and a pregnancy in my family. And also by the fact that I’ve always felt Harry and Dudley never had enough closure in canon. So this is where my brain went with that.
Summary: Dudley and a pregnant Harry clear the air when Draco throws his husband a surprise baby shower.
Harry rubbed his hands gently along his burgeoning belly, biting his lip. “What if I’m a horrible father?”
“You won’t be a horrible father, Harry. I know it. You learned from mine what you ought not to do,” Dudley offered.
“And mine,” Draco added. “You aren’t going through this alone, Harry, I promise.”
“I’d better not, since I happen to be carrying your son.” Harry eyed the chaos of the surprise baby shower all around him and sighed. “This was very nice of you, Draco, but I’m tired. I was looking forward to a quiet evening at home, just us."
“Just a few minutes longer, and I’ll send everyone home so you can rest.”
“Thank you, love. It was good to see you, Dudley. I’m surprised you came. But glad.”
“I wanted to show you that I’ve changed. And apologise as well. I’m not the bully you grew up with any longer.”
“I knew that a long time ago, but it’s good to lay the past to rest. I’d be glad if we didn’t hate one another going forward.”
“I want that too.”
“I’m so pleased.”
“I didn’t mean to make you cry again, Harry,” Dudley lamented, looking uncomfortable.
“I’m sorry. Everything makes me cry just now. Stupid hormones. But at least these are happy tears.”
“You’ll be a wonderful dad, Harry. It looks like you’ve got good people around you, and you’ve always had a good heart. I know parenthood is a major challenge, but at least it’s a good change.”
“Fair point. And I’ve been reading everything about parenting I possibly can. I want to be prepared.”
“You’ll be fine. Just do the exact opposite of whatever my father did, and you’ll be gold.”
“You aren’t wrong. But what changed? I thought you admired your father.”
“I did when I was younger, but after you saved my life, it made me see his flaws more. I can love him because he’s my father without liking him as a person.”
“You really have grown up.”
“It was past time, I’d say.”
“Keep in touch, yeah?”
“I will. Oh, and Harry? Make Draco rub your feet. My wife loves that, says it helps some with the swelling.”
“Well, that’s one way to let me know I’m going to have a nibling. Very sneaky. Is it a boy or a girl?”
“We don’t know for sure yet, but they are already showing signs of magic. Maybe our two little ones could play together sometime? I want my child to grow up being accepted and loved, just as I know yours will.”
“Of course. You’re stuck with us now.”
“I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
