Hit them where it hurts

I piggybacked this from
olimakiella. The thoughts added at the bottom are hers, not mine, but I like her suggestions. Spread the word about this movement. I know America is a consumer-based culture, but I say freedom is more important than having things. We need to let them know that we won't stand for restricted freedom of expression.

......who feels the need to take a break from an increasingly dysfunctional relationship.

Edited to add my own thoughts (not part of the original reddit call for action): And if you do not feel like taking a total break and perhaps want just a trial separation or couple's counseling, then perhaps consider Black March Lite 2.0 = spend, but spend money on those content creators and independent retailers who came out against SOPA/PIPA. And tell them why you're buying their products in March. There are many of them.
And for those who favor the more targeted boycott, you can find info here. But no matter which, you can participate and you can tailor your level of participation. We have the tools, the will and the strength to take a stand.

Black March - Thursday March 1st 2012 to Saturday March 31st 2012
With the continuing campaigns for internet-censoring litigation such as SOPA and PIPA, and the closure of sites like Megaupload under allegations of 'piracy' and 'conspiracy' the time has come to take a stand against music, film, and media companies' lobbyists.
The only way is to hit them where it hurts.
Their profit margins.
March 2012 is the end of the First Quarter in economic reports world wide.
Do not buy a single record. Do not download a single song, legally or illegally. Do not go to see a single film in cinemas, or download a copy. Do not buy a DVD in the stores. Do not buy a videogame. Do not buy a single book or magazine.
Wait the four weeks to buy them in April: see a film later, etc... Holding out for just four weeks, maximum, will leave a gaping hole in media companies profits for the first quarter, an economic hit which will in turn be observed by governments world wide as stocks and shares will blip from a large enough loss of incomes. This action will give a statement of intent:
"We will not tolerate the Media Industries' lobbying for legislation that will censor the internet."
Thoughts from
bleedingangel84: It seems to me that America has been tightening the noose on freedom of expression for years. SOPA/PIPA/ACTA are just a few examples of this. The American government has no right to curtail our Internet experience(s). I think that we as a people can agree that piracy is wrong. No one disputes that. But, the solution to this problem should not involve governmental policing of the Internet. America was founded on the basis of individual freedom. Many of our ancestors immigrated to this country in order to escape government control of their private lives. Why is it that we as a country never seem to learn anything from history? I'm all for protecting the rights to intellectual property, but my question is, who decides where governmental control ends? How far is too far? I'd go so far as to say that America is turning into a shadow of its former self, and that scares me. I used to say: "Thank God I live in the US. The country may not be perfect, but at least we are free." Now that sense of freedom seems like a fading memory. I don't claim to be political at all. I would never want to be, but we all deserve to have our freedom, in whatever form that takes. Call me idealistic, but I've always believed that was the basis if this country. So, I say, grant us our freedom. Please stop trying to emulate the countries whose ideologies you have fought wars over. Men, women and children have given their lives for this freedom, and no ruling government should have the right to dictate any part of the human experience. Such behavior is the antithesis of the American ideal.
As an American, recent legislation and actions of my government make me sad, angry, and scared. Where are the boundaries of government control, and who sets them? This country was founded on the basis of individual freedom, and government closure of certain websites curtails that freedom. Let's let them know we are not happy with these actions by hitting them where it matters: in the pocketbook.
I'll get off the soapbox now, as I think I've made my point. Perhaps I'm not entitled to an opinion as I can't vote, but you got it anyway. So far at least, America is still a somewhat free country.
