Notes: Not my usual pairing. No fluff in sight. Very maudlin themes to be seen here, so if this isn’t your cup of pumpkin juice, feel free to skip this. This has not been beta-read at all, so if you see any errors, feel free to comment and say so. Apologies for the lack of fluff, but this is what came out of my brain with these prompts. Constructive feedback and criticism is welcome.
Summary: Dumbledore misses Grindelwald, but he doesn’t want to.
“Albus, what is the matter with you?”
“Minerva! I’m sorry. Was I needed for something?”
“Rolanda Hooch wants you to check over the Quidditch equipment before the next game. She thinks the Slytherins might have jinxed the bludgers again.”
“Ah. I shall see to it that they haven’t.”
“The Slytherins play Quidditch as though they were at war.”
“I’m aware. That has always been house strategy. ”
“Albus, are you quite all right? I thought I saw some tears when I came in here. It’s not like you to cry.”
“Tears don’t come when you miss a person, but they come when you don’t want to miss a person.”
“Don’t tell me you’re thinking of him again. “
“An old man’s memory is long, Minerva. And he was my friend before he became an enemy.”
“You loved him. And you know it.”
“What I know is that I don’t want to miss him. I shouldn’t.”
“Missing him as he was doesn’t mean you condone what he became later. He made his own choice, Albus. I’m only sorry that it still causes you pain.”
“I regret that I couldn’t persuade him. His lust for power was stronger than the feelings of his heart.”
“He was a bastard.”
“Minerva!”
“He hurt you, Albus. I won’t apologise for speaking the truth.”
“The past is past. The dead deserve their peace. We must go on as best we can.”
“He was evil, Albus. You did what you had to. Mourn for your loss if you must, but don’t you dare feel guilt for ridding the magical world of his taint. You did the world a great service.”
“At what cost, Minerva? He was the only man I ever loved, and I had to kill him. Please allow me my moment of human grief. I may be magical, but I’m not omniscient. I can’t help feeling as though I failed him.”
“You didn’t fail him, Albus. He failed himself. You don’t deserve this burden of guilt. Take it off.”
“When it’s time, and I’m reunited with him.”
“Albus Dumbledore, you sentimental idiot. What shall I do with you?”
“Bring me my socks, please. The castle is rather chilled this evening.”
