After the Return
“I can hardly believe you’re alive. How?”
“Apparently it was not my time yet.”
“I’m—pleased, sir. And I’m sorry.”
“What have you to be sorry for, Potter?”
“My name is Harry, not Potter. And I’m sorry that I never showed you the respect you deserved. I wouldn’t blame you for despising me. I bear too much resemblance to my father for you to do anything else, I suppose.”
“You are wrong. I may have hated the person you reminded me of the most, but I never hated you. I can’t. Your eyes are too much like your mother’s, and I loved her.”
“Loved? You protected me for her sake. You love her still. Your heart bleeds for her.”
“Do not presume to know what I feel—Harry.”
“After seeing your memories, how can I think otherwise? Just seeing me seems to cause you pain.”
“Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional. It was you who kept me wanting to live. I had to make sure that you survived.”
“Because I was the only one capable of defeating him. With help from you, of course. You always seem to be saving me from something, even when I’m unaware of it. “
“Because of your eyes. You always seemed as if you were ready to go off and conquer the world. It drove me mad that you never seemed to care that you weren’t fulfilling your potential.”
“Yes, well. I was taught not to place value in myself growing up.”
“Then we are more alike I realised.”
“So I saw. I can only apologise for the way my father behaved toward you. I am not like him.”
“I’m aware of that, Harry.”
“Oh?”
“Lily helped me to see that. She sent me back. Said that you still have need of me.”
“There is so much I’ve still left to learn. I know of none better to teach me.”
“I shall make a valiant attempt. Though I wonder how I can be expected to teach the boy who saved the world from destruction.”
“Not a boy. I am of age now, Severus.”
“In that case, I have a question, Harry: Do you like olive oil on your pasta?”
