Summary: Harry and Severus are training, but Harry has some things to say.
Training
“Potter! Again! You can’t study the darkness by flooding it with light, you foolish boy!”
“With all due respect, Professor, I’d rather simply obliterate the darkness if it all the same to you,” Harry huffed irritably. And my name is not boy. Call me Harry if you must, but don’t call me boy.”
“You are much too Gryffindor Potter. You attach too much importance to names.”
“This from the man who still flinched every time Sirius called him Snivellus. Names have power, Professor. Even you can’t deny that.”
“Two points to Gryffindor, Potter, for showing your Slytherin cunning,” Severus responded with a wry smile.
“Do you have some aversion to using my given name, Professor? I’m Harry, not Potter. When you say Potter, it makes me think of my father.”
“Your appearance does rather bring him to mind,” Severus stated.
“I am not my father, you realise. I know he was cruel to you for no good reason, and I’m sorry for it. It made me sick to see what he did to you then, and you were so angry at me. I’m surprised you even let Dumbledore coerce you into teaching me again.”
“Yes, well, you are the wizarding world’s best protection against the Dark Lord. I couldn’t in good conscience let the magical world be destroyed simply because there are wounds that never healed. So here we are.”
“I appreciate the sacrifice you’re making, sir. I know it isn’t easy for you.”
“Enough of this silly sentimentality. We should return to work.”
“It makes you uncomfortable, doesn’t it? To see me as separate from my father? I’m a part of her as well, you know.”
“Stubborn and mule-headed is what you are,” Severus replied, seeming reluctantly amused, “Does nothing deter you?”
Harry smiled. “It’s nice to see your black bat façade crack sometimes.”
“That’s what she said as well. I know you are not your father. But you are still my student. It wouldn’t be appropriate to treat you as more than that.”
“I’m not asking for you to take me out for coffee or whisper sweet nothings in my ear, but I do have a name.”
“Fine, then. Back to work, Harry.”
