Summary: Snape regrets meddling.
The Price of Meddling
“Snape is watching us again, Draco.”
“How does his expression look?’
“Like he’s thinking of something that makes him sad and angry at the same time. I don’t think he likes us being together.”
“He doesn’t. I think he might be jealous. But it’s because of him that we’re together in the first place.”
“Okay, now I have to hear the explanation for this one. What did Snape have to do with you asking me to go on a date?”
“It was something he said to me that gave me the courage to approach you and thank you for returning my wand.”
“What was it he said?” Harry asked curiously.
“I told him that circumstances are the rulers of the weak, and that the wise use them as instruments.”
“Sir! I—we didn’t see you!” Harry squeaked in embarrassment.
“Clearly not, as you were too busy whispering sweet nothings to each other.”
“We were actually talking about you, Severus, and how fortunate we are that you aided in our relationship.”
“I had merely reached my limits in dealing with your moping. For six years, it was nothing but ‘Potter this and Potter that. I had had enough. But if I had known you two would be permanently fused together, I might have suggested a different course. Your public displays of affection are uncalled for, and extremely disquieting.”
“Ah, that explains your ferocious, anguished face earlier, then.”
“I owe you no explanations, Mister Malfoy. I am still a professor in this school, and as such, I am still within my rights to give you a detention if I see fit.”
“But you won’t, will you Severus?”
“Against my better judgement, no, I will not. You know why .”
“Why not?” Harry wondered.
“Because I know that Mister Malfoy and yourself would merely find a way to use the circumstances to your advantage, while torturing me in the process.”
“It’s your fault, you realise. It was you who reminded me that I should not let circumstances derail me from obtaining what I desire.”
“Merlin save me from Slytherin teenagers. I did not mean for you to take that as licence to snog all over the blasted castle!”
