Notes: This was inspired by the idea of Alan Rickman reading The Prophet, which also happens to be a favourite of mine. I couldn’t get the idea out of my head, and this was the result. I hope readers enjoy, but if you don’t, feel free to say that as well.

Summary:
Harry and Severus finally have a moment to themselves.

A Moment in Time

“What are you reading, Severus?”

“It’s Kahlil Gibran. The Prophet. I’ve always rather enjoyed it.”

“Would you read some aloud? I love to listen to you read.”

Severus paged through the book intently, stopping at a favourite passage and beginning to read in his deep, rich voice.

“That’s so nice. ‘And forget not that the earth delights to play with your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair.’ That’s a good reminder for everyone, wouldn’t you say?”

“Is that your Gryffindor way of telling me I’ve been working too hard?”

“I’ve hardly even seen you outside your Potions lab for weeks, and you know I always feel a bit like a wallflower there. That’s your domain. I don’t belong.”

“Don’t talk nonsense, Harry. You may be a bit hopeless at Potions, but you are always welcome wherever I happen to be.”

“I don’t like to bother you while you’re brewing. Your work is important.”

“Yes, it is, but so are you. You know that. I apologise if you’ve felt at all neglected of late.”

“Not neglected, really. Just lonely. I’ve missed spending the evenings with you. I get bored watching quiz shows and reading Quidditch magazines.”

“Why did you not tell me before?”

“As I said, your work is important. I’d have felt like a whinging child if I’d come to you complaining of being lonely and bored.”

“Harry Potter, sometimes you are too hopelessly thick for your own good,” Severus complained fondly.

“But you love me anyway?” Harry asked, biting his lip nervously.

“You know I do.”

“I do know. But it’s nice to hear you say it occasionally.”

“Harry Potter, I love you. Merlin help me, I don’t know how it happened, but you somehow burrowed yourself into my heart.”

“I believe it began with you calling me an idiot after I saved your life,” Harry reminded him.

“Well, you’d just sucked poisonous snake venom from my neck. You could’ve very well poisoned yourself.”

“But I didn’t. And we got him in the end.”

“Only thanks to your preternatural luck. Thank Merlin. I was so scared you’d left us permanently.”

“I couldn’t leave you.”

“Thank goodness for Gryffindor sentimentality.”
