Summary: Hermione convinces Harry to ask Draco to the Ministry Ball.

Ministry Ball

“Are you going to the Ministry Ball this year, Harry?”

“I’d rather not. I hate those stuffy formal affairs and all the ‘Hero-Who-Lived’ rubbish. And Ginny refused to go with me.”

“Well what did you expect her to do? You’re gay. It’s not as though she could carry on being your girlfriend when she found that out, could she?”

“I didn’t ask her to be my girlfriend. I just needed a partner for the ruddy ball! Was that too much to ask?”

“Why don’t you ask Draco? I know you fancy him.”

“I do not! Have you forgotten how he always fought with us at Hogwarts?”

“Considering how often he called me Mudblood back then, no I haven’t. But he is a different person now. We all are. You should ask him.”

“I can’t. Same-sex couples aren’t traditionally allowed at the ball.”

“And since when have you had problems breaking tradition?”

“I just don’t think the Ministry Ball is the right time or place to do that. I’m no politician, y’know.”

“Harry, something has to be done. Freedom and justice can’t be parceled out to suit political convenience. You died to free to free all of us in the wizarding world, not just the ones the Ministry deemed appropriate. I don’t think it’s right to stand for freedom for one group of people and deny it to others, and that’s what the Ministry is doing by not allowing same-sex couples. Take a stand."

“Hermione, this isn’t like SPEW, ok? I don’t want people gawping at my scar all evening, and if I go, the Minister will make me join him on stage and make a speech about what I did. I’d rather just stay home and eat takeaway.”

“Are you sure I can’t persuade you out of it? I saw Malfoy checking out your arse in the canteen at work last week. I think he’d be interested.”

“Hermione, you should run for office someday. You could sell air conditioning units in the North Pole.”

“I take it that means you’ll do it, then?”

“Do I have a choice? We both know you’ll talk until you wear me down. And anyway, Malfoy is rather fit.”
