hogwarts365 Prompt 253- “I will never fit in because I wasn't meant to” ― Cher Lloyd, Ocean of emptiness, Aboveboard
Notes: Just a little something inspired by the prompts. I hope readers enjoy it.
Summary: Harry offers Draco comfort after an insult, and Draco makes an offer in return.
“Malfoy! Would you please wait?!”
“Why should I, Potter? I will never fit in because I wasn’t meant to. We both know that’s not how my father trained me.”
“You’re more than your Malfoy training. I know it. Your father may have done some rotten and underhanded things, but you’ve worked hard to overcome the stigma he put on your family name.”
“What good does that do me when no one will give me a chance to prove myself? You’re the only one who doesn’t look on me with suspicion, and I’ve yet to learn why.”
“I know things about you. I was there on the roof the night the Death Eaters came to Hogwarts. If Snape hadn’t intervened, you’d have lowered your wand, I know it.”
“Oh, wonderful! How is it that you are always around when I’m humiliated in some way?”
“Draco, it isn’t humiliating that you couldn’t kill. That says something about your character, and it isn’t something negative. You helped us defeat Voldemort in your own way. And not everything that I did was entirely aboveboard, either.”
“And yet, you’re the wizarding world’s golden child while I’m the pariah.”
“People are idiots sometimes. I hate all that Golden Boy shit. At least people leave you to yourself. They fawn over me to the point that I’d almost kill for a moment alone sometimes.”
“It’s funny, Potter. Here you are wanting your privacy, and I’m swimming in an ocean of emptiness in the manor by myself. That’s partly why I signed on for Auror training. That, and to make amends to you.”
“We were kids, Malfoy. You have nothing to make amends for.”
“Be that as it may, I’d still like to buy you dinner.”
“Why?”
“To thank you, you idiotic Gryffindor. If not for you, none of us would be alive.”
“ I just did what I had to do. That hardly deserves gratitude. I killed a man.”
“Voldemort was a monster, not a man. “
“He was still human once.”
“He was evil. You saved lives.”
“So did you. And you don’t deserve to be booted from Auror training. Smith was always an idiot.”
“Can I buy you dinner now?”
