“I have a surprise for you.”
“You got me flowers? They’re beautiful, Draco! But what did you do?”
“You’re so suspicious, Harry. I’m hurt.”
“Experience has taught me well. What. Did you. Do?”
“My parents are hosting a ball at the manor, and I agreed we would go.”
“Malfoy, I ought to hex you. You know I can’t dance, and I’m absolutely pants at socialising with your parents. Your father always makes a face when I get near him as if he smells compost or some such thing. He’s never forgiven me for daring to ‘soil his precious son’. He hates me.”
“He doesn’t hate you.”
“He doesn’t like me.”
“Mother loves you.”
“At least she doesn’t look at me as if I have weeds growing out of my head.”
“Father just doesn’t know how to relate to you. He was raised to let house elves do all the hard work.”
“Meanwhile, I was treated like one. Forgive me, but that’s hard to grow out of. I’m used to doing things without magic or outside help. And don’t think that your changing the subject is going to distract me. I’m still mad at you.”
“I won’t make you dance, I promise. We’ll say hello to my parents and then go hide in the gardens. Mother has some gorgeous night-blooming flowers that are just beginning to blossom. I think they deserve to be cherished, don’t you?”
“You’ve gone soft, Malfoy.”
“What can I say? You bring out the best in me.”
“How can I stay mad at that?”
