Notes: Part 9. Follows Unexpected Reactions. This series has a mind of its own now. I hope readers enjoy.
Summary: Draco breaks the news to his parents.
“Draco, how could you do this to us?! You know we had a contract!” Lucius’ shouted.
“Forgive me, Father, but marriages should not be business arrangements. I couldn’t face the thought of marrying Astoria when my preferences are elsewhere."
“It is clear to me you’ve lost what little remained of your senses. Eloping with a Weasley, of all people!”
“Father, I care for Ronald. He challenges me. You know I never could stand being bored.”
“Astoria’s family is furious the contract was broken! What would you have me do, Draco?!”
“You needn’t worry about that, Father. I don’t think the Greengrasses will be giving us any trouble.”
“How can you say that?”
“We caught Asotoria in a rather compromising posing with another woman. Unless her family wants that to become public knowledge, they should let us off the contract.”
“Do you have proof of this?”
“I am willing to place my memories in a Pensieve for public viewing. If it’s good enough for legal proceedings, it should be good enough for them.”
“Blackmail. That’s clever. But there is still the matter of an heir.”
“Ronald and I have talked about adoption. Many children from the old families lost their parents in the war.”
“I suppose you have an answer for everything?”
“You taught me well. I do more with my time than listen to jazz music and indulge an obsession with odd hats.”
“What else would you have me do under house arrest? At least those things keep me away from public scrutiny.”
“Fair enough.”
“I am still not happy.”
“Nor did I expect you to be. But I am, and that is what matters. It’s my life, not yours.”
“I suppose things could be worse. At least Weasley is a war hero. That should reflect well on the Malfoy name. And his being close to Potter can only help.”
“Isn’t there something you are forgetting, Lucius?” Narcissa chimed in.
“What?”
“We love you, Draco, and we’re glad you are happy.”
“Thank you, Mother.”
“But you must allow us to host a party.”
“Just make certain there’s an open bar,” Lucius demanded, “if I’m expected to play nice with Arthur Weasley, I’ll need alcohol.”
