Summary: Draco and Astoria meet for the first time since he eloped with Ron.

“How could you do this, Draco? It shows a woeful lack of respect for tradition!”

“Oh, I’m the one showing lack of respect for tradition? Why don’t you quit playing games ? I know you’ve been seeing Ginevra Weasley.”

Astoria paled so rapidly that Draco wondered if she was going to faint. “Oh, Merlin. How did you know?”

“Ronald and I saw you. We’d gone over to tell you about our elopement and you had your face between her spread thighs. I told your father.”

“Draco! Why would you do that?”

“Astoria, he wouldn’t have let me free of the contract otherwise. I had to take action. I felt that was more prudent than dancing around the subject with him all night."

“I suppose you’re correct, but it wasn’t very gentlemanly behavior on your part.”

“Why were you not honest with me about Ginevra? Perhaps we could’ve avoided the whole engagement.”

“I had to enter into the contract with you to please my parents. You know what that’s like.”

“I do. At least this way, we’ve each got suitable partners that make us happy instead of being miserable with each other.”

“Are you really happy with Ronald?”

“When he’s not driving me insane, yes. It’s never boring.”

“Has he learned better table manners since Hogwarts? He used to eat like a pig.”

“I intend to coach him in that, though I do say there is something rather endearing about his enthusiasm around food.”

“Now I know you must be in love.”

“I am, yes. What of you and Ginevra?”

“She’s lovely. Nothing like Ronald.”

“Astoria, that’s my husband you’re referring to. He may well be your brother-in-law one day. I suggest you keep your negative opinions to yourself. Will you come to the engagement party? Show the gossiping public we’ve buried the hatchet?”

“I suppose I should. Everyone will expect me to be upset our engagement was broken so abruptly, but I’m not. Honestly, it’s rather a relief.”

“What we feel about it is really no one’s business except ours. I just want us both to be happy.”

“Marriage agrees with you, Draco. It softened your hardness.”

“Oh, Merlin forbid I ever go soft.”
