dove_drabbles Prompt 137-You deserve this. JMDC 229-passing time
Notes: This got slightly more introspective and maudlin than I ended but I hope readers enjoy it nonetheless. This is where my brain went with the prompts.
Summary:Draco helps Harry through his residual trauma.
“Do you ever feel as if your whole life is a lie?”
“What do you mean, Harry?”
“I mean I feel like a fraud. Everyone thinks I’m this big hero. I was considered some kind of a miracle as a baby, and I’m just an ordinary man who can’t even sleep through the night without nightmares. I didn’t even make most of my own money. I inherited it.”
“That’s not a bad thing, Harry. And it doesn’t mean that you’re a fraud or any such thing. It just means that you’re human. Besides, you haven’t touched your inheritance, you work as an Auror, and everyone loves you, including me. Don’t be so hard on yourself. You rescued the entire world from an evil wizard who wanted to either kill or enslave them. Give yourself a bit of compassion. I’d say you’ve more than earned it. You work hard to have a good life and make others’ lives better. I’d say you deserve this.”
“Of course you would say that. You love me. But sometimes I still hear uncle Vernon’s voice in my head telling me how worthless I am.”
“Oh, Merlin. Don’t keep listening to echoes of that old walrus, Harry. He doesn’t deserve space in your thoughts. I know trauma isn’t that easily dealt with, but I would hope that the passing of time would help you gain a more accurate perspective.”
“During the day, yes. But I can’t stop the dark thoughts that come in the middle of the night sometimes.”
“That’s why you have me. I will always be here to hold your hand in the darkness. You aren’t alone, Harry Potter.”
“Thank Merlin for that. You’re everything to me, Draco.”
“Good. Then all is right with the world.”
“You’re lucky I love you.”
“I love you too, Potter.”
