My review of ParaNorman and an RL update.

Yesterday, my sister and I took my oldest nephew to see ParaNorman. I was a bit surprised at some of the things they had in the movie. In case you don't know what it's about, the premise is that an eleven-year-old boy named Norman can see and comminicate with the dead. The ability means he is the only one capable of saving his town, which has been cursed by a witch.
Most of the people in Norman's life make things more difficult by not really believing that he can see ghosts. They think that he's either faking the behaviour, or they bully him for being weird. One of the things that kind of bothered me in this movie was that early on in the film, Norman's father refers to his abilities as "limp-wristed hippie behavior" when discussing it with Norman's mother. It was only one moment, but it bugged me that they would have that line in a children's movie. I get that they were likely going for realism, and Norman's father does eventually realize he is wrong, but still.
One thing I was pleasantly surprised by was the fact that they actually did reveal in the end that one of the characters is gay. He's kinda what you'd think of as the "dumb-jock" stereotype, but I was surprised they would put that into a movie made for children. Overall, it was a good movie with a positive message about being understood and accepted for who you are. I don't know that I'd pay to see it again, but it was nice to spend some time with my nephew.
I really enjoyed the day out with my sister and nephew. It was nice to be able to get away for awhile. I also liked that they used Rob Zombie's "Season of the Witch" in the movie. It was another thing that made me raise my eyebrows in a good way.On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give this film a 7.
Afterward, we went out for burgers and fries at Five Guys Burgers and Fries, and those are some of the best burgers I've eaten since my father died. He used to make really good ones, and that's as close as I've been able to get. I kind of pigged out a little, but it was so worth it. I hardly ever eat beef anymore, so that fed a craving I didn't realize I had.
I came home and eventually conked out on the sofa.
So, that's ehat I've been doing this weekend. I was just grateful to get out of the house. It's such a relief.
