The Best Thing
“You are in serious denial, Draco. Just ask Potter out already.”
“Pansy! Have you no sense of decorum? Honestly!” Draco huffed.
“No. Decorum and protocol never brought me anything good. I gave them up when Potter saved us all. You’d do well to follow my example.”
Draco snorted and swept an elegant hand through his white-blond hair, silently bemoaning the fact that they were all forced to attend school sanctioned social events with the aim of promoting school unity. He had loftier things on his mind.
“I can’t, Pansy. Have you forgotten I’m supposed to produce an heir for my family line?”
“That’s not an issue, darling. I’d still be more than happy to have your babies, even if we both know I’ll never be Mrs. Malfoy. Face facts: You are in love with Potter. You want him. He wants you. Get your overly-coiffed head out of your lily-white arse and ask the boy out.”
“I am not overly coiffed, you mad little harpy! And I do not like Potter!” Draco protested vehemently.
Pansy simply smiled and leveled Draco with a calm stare, crossing her arms against her chest.
“You look at him like he’s a five-course meal and you are dying of starvation, and you know it. Don’t lie to me. It’s not becoming.”
“Pansy, don’t be ridiculous. Potter would never want me, even if I wanted him. Which I don’t.”
Pansy let out a growl of frustration, causing Draco to take a step back.
“Draco Malfoy, I ought to hex your balls off. You and Harry are both stubborn arseholes. You deserve each other. If I have to sit through another Defense class with him mooning over you, I swear I will Obliviate myself.”
“He-Harry likes me? How do you know? And why didn’t you tell me?”
“We talked, okay? I caught him looking at you like treacle tart he wanted to devour one day in class. I told him to ask you out, that you’d say yes. Clearly, he hasn’t yet, because the two of you are still pining over each other. Idiots.”
“He wanted to ask me out? How? When? Why?”
“Oh, you really aren’t that thick, are you? Harry’s been thinking about no one but you since he saved you from the FiendFyre. I heard Weasley moaning to Granger about it just before Charms a few weeks ago.”
“Really?” Draco asked.
“Yes, Draco really. Now be a Slytherin, take the initiative and ask him out, before I give into my temptation to hex you for making me worry over you.” Pansy demanded.
“He’s just so…good. Why would he even look at me?” Draco wondered.
“Why wouldn’t he? You are gorgeous, Draco. Anyone with a pulse would be mad over you.”
“You are too kind, Pansy. You really think Potter would go out with me?”
“I know. He’s looking at you like he wants to eat you alive right now, as a matter of fact,” Pansy said smugly.
Draco slid his gaze to the opposite side of the Great Hall, taking in the nearly predatory expression in Potter’s eyes. He slowly walked toward Draco, cementing the idea that the blond Slytherin was indeed his prey. Draco found that he couldn’t find the will to care, but felt something disturbingly like jealousy when Potter addressed Pansy as if they were old friends.
“These Unity parties are so deadly dull, aren’t they Pansy? I thought you might know how to liven things up a bit. We certainly have some interesting conversations in Defense, don’t we?’
“Certainly, Harry. Perhaps I should go find Blaise and see if he’d part with some of his tequila for a game of spin-the-bottle,” Pansy suggested.
“You do that. I need to talk to Draco here for a minute,” Harry responded.
“About bloody time one of you got off your arse about it, Harry. Deal with him. His mouth is so wide open it looks like he’s trying to swallow an egg.”
“Pansy!” both voices censured.
“Oh, get over it. Kiss each other and have done with it. You both know you want to.”
“Pansy, you stupid-get out of here! Go away!” Draco barked, feeling his face get hot.
“Oh, fine, fine. I’m leaving. Don’t get your knickers in a twist, Drake.”
She was laughing happily as she walked away, leaving the two boys alone.
Harry was eying Draco speculatively.
“You know, Pansy is quite a smart witch. Perhaps we should take her advice. I’ve wanted to kiss you all evening. Your lips look so soft. Are they?”
“Why not kiss me and satisfy your curiosity?” Draco offered huskily.
For the space of several heartbeats, Draco worried that Potter was playing a cruel joke, but his fear subsided when he felt Potter’s lips touch his own. The kiss was tentative at first, but soon grew more heated as both young men explored and teased with their lips and tongues, tasting and battling until both were breathless.
“That was amazing. I guess it’s true that giving into temptation is sometimes a good thing.”
Draco’s reply came slowly, as he was still stunned by Harry’s kisses.
“Sometimes, Harry, giving into temptation is the best thing.”
